DÎLOK — Peace Mother Duri Kaygusuz said: “There can be no talk of brotherhood until our children return home and isolation and imprisonment come to an end.”
Şaban Kaygusuz was wounded during a clash in 2018 in Şirnex (Şırnak) and subsequently arrested. Despite losing his right hand and right leg and receiving a 90 percent disability report, he has not been released due to a decision by the Council of Forensic Medicine that he “can remain in prison.”
Kaygusuz, who has been imprisoned for eight years, is currently held at Kayseri Bünyan No. 1 T-Type Closed Prison. His mother Duri Kaygusuz said authorities are fully aware of her son’s condition.
“He has no leg and no arm. The medical board in Diyarbakır said he could not remain in prison, but instead of releasing him, they quickly transferred him to Kayseri so he would not be freed,” she said.
She stated that her son has been subjected to torture and psychological pressure for six years in Kayseri. She also stressed that during an examination at the forensic institute in Istanbul, doctors insulted him and refused to issue a medical report. “A doctor with a conscience would not keep someone in this condition in prison,” she added.
DISABLED PRISONER HELD IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
Duri Kaygusuz stated that her son is unable to meet his basic needs on his own and has been held in a single-person cell for the past year. “He cannot live in a cell. He falls while going down the stairs and has narrowly escaped death several times,” she said, adding that prison authorities and prosecutors are aware of the situation.
She noted that his requests to be transferred closer to his family, to either Dilok or Maraş, have been repeatedly denied.
CALL TO POLITICIANS
Addressing all political parties in parliament, including Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM Party, Justice and Development Party (AKP), Turkish Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), and Republican People's Party (CHP), Kaygusuz called for action. “If your own child were in prison without a leg and an arm, what would you do?” she asked and added: “We do not want any Turkish or Kurdish mothers to cry. We want peace and equality. But there can be no talk of brotherhood until our children return and this isolation ends.”
CALL FOR FREEDOM AND PEACE
Duri Kaygusuz said her son remains steadfast despite the hardships he has faced and called for justice for all political prisoners. “I am not only asking for Şaban, but for all prisoners. They are all my children,” she said.
She also stressed that lasting peace depends on the release of Abdullah Öcalan, adding: “There can be no real peace until he is free and the oppression in prisons ends. We are hopeful and waiting for better days.”
