QERS – Seventeen people who were killed in the Dîgor Massacre were commemorated on the 32nd anniversary of their deaths.
The massacre took place on August 14, 1993, when villagers attempted to march to Dîgor to protest house raids, forced conscription into the village guard system, food embargoes, and arbitrary detentions. During this peaceful protest, speacial operations police opened fire, killing 17 people, including 5 children, and injuring more than 200.
The Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party organized a memorial at the site where the killings occurred. The ceremony was attended representatives of various civil society organizations.
DEM Party Îdir (Iğdır) MP Yılmaz HUn said: "This massacre happened right here 32 years ago. Villagers from Dîgor were protesting state oppression and the imposition of the village guard system. They were met with deadly gunfire. According to official records, 17 people were killed. As with many cases in Turkey, no one has been prosecuted for the Dîgor Massacre. At a time when peace and negotiation are being discussed, the state must confront its crimes against the Kurdish people. We will never forget those who were killed here."
The commemoration concluded with the symbolic gesture of placing 17 carnations at the location where the victims were killed.
