NEWS CENTRE - 229 Iranian lawyers sent a letter to the Iranian judiciary to stop the death sentences given to Warishah Muradi, Pakshan Azizi and Sharifa Mohammadi.

Reactions against the Iranian regime's death sentences against Warishah Muradi, Pakshan Azizi and Sharifa Mohammadi are growing. In this context, 229 Iranian lawyers sent a joint letter to the Iranian Judiciary against the death sentences given to Warishah Muradi, Pakshan Azizi and Sharifa Mohammadi. The letter emphasised that the death sentences must be suspended and the files must be re-examined.

The letter reads: "The death sentences given to the three women are not only contrary to Islamic, humanitarian and human rights standards, but also to international standards on the right to life and the law in Iran. The sentences for all three women will damage national cohesion and provoke feelings of discrimination."

Amir Reisiyan, the lawyer of political prisoner Pakhshan Azizi announced that on 8 January (2025) the Supreme Court of Iran upheld the death sentence given to Pakhshan Azizi. Amir Reisiyan stated that the document submitted by the defence was also rejected by the court.

In addition, Warishah Muradi was officially notified by her lawyers of the death verdicts issued in the hearings held on 16 June and 4 October 2024.

The Committee for the Defence of Sharifa Mohammadi announced that political prisoner Sharifa Mohammadi was sentenced to death once again on 13 February. During the retrial process, it was announced that the death sentence against Sharifa Mohammadi was accepted by Mohammad Ali Derwêş Goftar, the President of the 2nd Chamber of the Iranian Rashid Revolutionary Court. Sherife Mohammadi, a 45-year-old women's rights activist from the city of Urmia, was tried in 2023 on charges of 'Propaganda Against the State' and sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of the Iranian regime on 4 July 2024. However, the decision was overturned on 12 December 2024. With the latest decision, the death sentence was approved again.
