ISTANBUL - Abdullah Öcalan is a "man of peace" said Party of the European Left President Walter Baier and added: "He is an important person and actor. The Kurdish people and the Turkish people need Abdullah Öcalan."

An international delegation consisting of journalists, parliamentarians and representatives of political parties arrived in Turkey on 2 December to receive information on the situation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in Imrali Type F High Security Prison. On the first day, the delegation visited the Asrin Law Office and the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), which act as Abdullah Öcalan's lawyers. On 3 December, the delegation met with Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) MPs in Ankara. The delegation then applied to the Ministry of Justice for a meeting with Abdullah Öcalan.

Walter Baier, President of the European Left Party, who was among the international delegation, made evaluations to Mezopotamya Agency (MA).

'ÖCALAN IS A MAN OF PEACE'

Abdullah Öcalan is a "man of peace"  said Baier and added: “He has written a lot of books and essays and articles in which he explained his peace plan. And we are supporting, with the European Left are supporting the non-violent, peaceful and democratic solution of the Kurdish problem, and that's why we support these plans and him as a personality who embodies the longing for peace for the Kurdish and the Turkish people after such a long time in which the Kurds were suppressed."

'PEOPLE NEED ABDULLAH ÖCALAN'

Baier said they are "concerned" about his health condition. “He lives in very dire conditions, isolated. We don't have current information about his health condition, and that's a human right issue. And secondly, he's a key person for the peace process. The Kurdish people and the Turkish people need Abdullah Öcalan, And they need him alive, and they need him in good mental and physical condition in order to come about with a peace plan and with a settlement of the Kurdish question, which must be democratic and which must be peaceful, I can say that the party of the European Left has taken various initiatives in supporting the cause of the Kurdish people," he said.

Barier stated that they demanded the European Union (EU) to remove the PKK from the list of "terrorist organisations". “We are a party of parties. That means we will inform our parties about the stay and the experiences and the insights we have one here. We are participating in demonstrations. Recently, in a mass rally in Germany and in other places in order to mobilize the public. Because, after all, we believe that solidarity is an issue of the people, the people and the peoples, and we as the European Left Party try to mobilize and try to spread information about the situation of Abdullah Öcalan and about Rojava and all the places in which the Kurdish people and the Kurdish women are fighting for equality and for peace," said Baier.

ATTACKS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Baier continued as follows: "We wish peace for the people in the Middle East. We want an end of the genocide in Gaza. We want an end of the continuous aggression of the right wing Israeli government in Lebanon, in Syria, in the West Jordan, I believe that peace in the Middle East is must be comprehensive, and it must include the peaceful solution, and the just solution of the Kurdish question."
