Education suspended in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah due to embargo 2025-12-30 16:49:50     NEWS CENTER – Education has been temporarily suspended in Sheikh Maqsoud (Şêxmeqsûd) and Ashrafiyah (Eşrefiyê) neighbourhoods after 13 schools were closed due to an embargo imposed on the area.   The Education and Teaching Committee of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighbourhoods announced in a decree that schools affiliated with the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), as well as schools jointly run by the Autonomous Administration and the transitional government, have halted education until further notice.   Co-chair of the Education and Teaching Committee, Zehide Reshid, stated that educational institutions have run out of fuel as a result of the embargo imposed on the two neighbourhoods by the transitional government and emphasized that the current situation has caused serious psychological effects on students.   She noted that the situation of students has been monitored for some time and that school attendance has dropped by 60 per cent, stressing that education cannot be sustained in a healthy manner under these conditions. She also stated that due to the embargo, approximately 4 thousand students receiving education under the Autonomous Administration’s curriculum in the two neighbourhoods are unable to access their textbooks.   The decree called for the immediate lifting of the embargo imposed on neighbourhoods.   There are a total of 13 schools in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah. Of these, three operate under the Autonomous Administration, while ten are jointly run by the transitional government and the Education and Teaching Committee. Approximately 25 thousand students at the primary, secondary, and high school levels receive education in these schools.
